3.0 Ideas for effective communication
If the training is to be successful, effective communication is essential - from recognition of the training need to the final evaluation of the event.

Without good communication things can go wrong. Further there are pitfalls to guard against such as :-

· The training is too early - or too late - to make any impact on performance trainees do not know what the training is about or what to expect.
· Trainees who are traditionally used to lectures are required to take part in group discussions or exercises, which might appear alien to them.
· The course is planned on a local public holiday.

Most of these issues can be anticipated and overcome by good communication between the workshop organisers and presenters on the one side, and the participants and their organisations on the other. Some simple considerations help improve training workshops and avoid disasters.

(a) Before the learning event
· Find out how the learners have been taught in the past
· Determine the real needs and Situation of the learners
· Determine whether the facilities are adequate for the envisaged training
· Make sure the training has the support of senior people.
· Decide how success will be measured

(b) During the learning process
· Find out how relevant the topics are to the work situation of the participants
· Illustrate what you are saying by using simple, down-to-earth examples rather than complex case studies.
· Communicate using topics, themes and issues in the local press
· Store unanswered questions, and remember to answer them before the end of the session / workshop
· Keep notes for participants in bullet point format
· Ensure the participants keep notes for future reference - few read essays, or even articles
· If you are working in a foreign language, at least translate the slides

( c ) After the Learning event
· Always communicate your thanks and best wishes to the participants
· Inform participants about follow-up study procedures, and how the instructor(s) can help to analyse the evaluatioon and inform the organiser of the results
· communicate to colleagues the results of the training and what can be learnt from these results
